HISTORY:
The Bridgeport Community Health Center is a mature, PHS/BPHC 330(E), JCAHO accredited community health center. Incorporated in 1976, the BCHC, a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded by a group of civic minded individuals committed to the development of a health care facility dedicated to the health of a neighborhood. The concept included a neighborhood location staffed by local residents, all potential users of the agency with a community based board of directors. A Federally Qualified Health Center, the BCHC has a present operating budget of approximately 10 million dollars, and is one of only two community health centers servicing the City of Bridgeport. The Center's location is a federally designated enterprise community area. The strengths of the organization include a deep rooted linkage to the community via its culturally sensitive staff, its Board of Directors comprised of Board members who live or work in the community, and its enthusiasm to help those most in need.

The Bridgeport Community Health Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide comprehensive health services to persons regardless of their ability to pay. Governed by a Board of Directors, who hire the Executive Director, set annual budgets and workplans, the BCHC employs several competent professionals with many areas of expertise, e.g., Medical Director, Dental Director, Director of Nursing, Finance Director, Grants Manager, and a Human Resource Director.

In November, 1998 the BCHC was awarded accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), making it the first federally qualified Health Center in Fairfield County to receive this distinction. The Center was reaccredited in November 2001.

Presently, the BCHC serves a target area which is medically underserved and also qualifies as a health professional shortage area. On-site outpatient "one stop shopping is provided to all life cycles through our Adult Medicine, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics, Dental, Podiatry Mental Health, Nutrition, Substance Abuse, HIV/AIDS, Social Services, and laboratory departments. Currently operating six full time health centers, BCHC staff (193 staff members-68% Spanish speaking) served 27,340 users through 105,254 encounters in 2003.
